Sydney George Benwell was born in North Warnborough in the second quarter of 1918. His parents were Percy Benwell, whose occupation recorded in the 1939 Register was “Road reconstructing”, and Alice Benwell, nee Finch, who lived at 1 Council Houses, North Warnborough[1]. Sydney is not recorded on the 1939 Register as he had enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1938.[2]
The 73 Anti-Tank Regiment was in North Africa and El Alamein with the 1st Armoured Brigade in 1942, with the 50 Infantry Division at D-Day in 1944 and as part of 30 Corps Troops in NW Europe in 1944, where Sydney was killed in action on 17 July 1944[3]. He is buried in Tilly-Sur- Seulles War Cemetery in France.
Sydney would have been awarded the War Medal 1939-1945 and the 1939-45 Star.
